Sonorous Shadow

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre, 61 Abel Smith St, Te Aro, Wellington
Johanna Mechen’s exhibition Sonorous Shadow explores the sometimes joyful, sometimes dark push and pull between creativity and motherhood. Collaborating with her children through photography and video, Mechen restages the remnants of play to offer a glimpse into two inner worlds. The new works nod to the ethics of women surrealists while also pointing to New Objectivity. They suggest a shadow of fear, anxiety and loss that often sits as undercurrent to creative and maternal experience.
